Social Skills Group Program

Our social skills groups are language based and designed to address the specific needs of the children that are placed in the group. Group placement is based on children’s age and skill level. Information about the child’s specific needs is gathered during the social skills screening process. Groups target development of appropriate social behavior, conversational skills, development of symbolic play skills, and ability to interact with peers.

Conversational Skills Programs

Together, with one of the teachers that is participating in the Hot Topics social skills program, I have developed a systematic method for teaching children how to have a conversation, improve their current conversational skills, and demonstrate knowledge of the behaviors that accompany social interaction.  Our method of instruction includes a set of programs arranged in a hierarchy of difficulty ranging from providing students with complete prepared errorless scripts to teaching students how to use detailed scripts that they have prepared themselves.  Scripts are then faded as we teach the children how to have a conversation without any scripts at all.  We have designed programs that teach children how to successfully initiate and maintain conversations about a variety of topics.  Children will participate in programs that teach how to be aware of and follow those unwritten rules of social conduct.  Through information gathered from home, children learn to recall and share information about their personal experiences with their family and friends.

All information on improving conversational skills is contained in our book, T.A.S.C. Tools for Achieving Social Confidence.
